Hey Oppo! I know I’ve been kind of a ghost these days because of the job and all that. But I just got back from a week hiking in the Mojave Desert, and I found some very cool, very old cars!

First off, the views were spectacular. I shot this on a cliff overlooking the Little San Bernadino Mountains:

Only about two miles into the desert, I stumbled across this old Ford. At least I think it’s a Ford. Very nice patina, though I don’t think those tires are going to be road-ready again anytime soon.

A few miles further in, I found these three trucks near the entrance to an abandoned gold mine. I did some research and found out that the mine opened in 1933. I’m not entirely sure when it was abandoned, it looks like it’s been untouched for a few decades, at least.

I didn’t get too close to the mine entrance, since there appeared to be a few sinkholes here and there. In any case, the gold itself is long gone.

Kinja'd!!!

The desert provided the perfect setting for some spectacular caving and bouldering, though this small cave proved full of snake skins (no snakes at home, thankfully!).

Kinja'd!!!

And for such a hot, scorched environment, there was a surprising amount of wildlife. The coyotes were too fast for my camera, but I did snap shots of a few of the desert critters.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

And finally, the crumbling ruins of this cinderblock house were completely unexpected in the middle of nowhere. There were a few charred timbers among the rubble, which makes me think it burned down.

Kinja'd!!!

All in all, a spectacular trip! I also visited Palm Springs and saw some cool cars there, including an E63 AMG wagon. I’ll have to post those soon.

I’d like to haul some of those parts home.

I think it would need to involve an ATV with some serious storage capacity.

If this one has a solid frame under it, it could be worth QUITE A BIT. (which I suspect it does)

Also, I’ll never know if you truly live the barefoot lifestyle you claim or if you just take off shoes/socks specifically for OPPO pictures.

I could strap a door and/or fender to my back and hike it home.

You’ll just have to come hiking with me sometime. Or ask one of the Opponauts who have the distinct privilege of knowing me.

Snakes tend not to bother you if you don’t bother them. And scorpions? Saw maybe two the whole week, and even those were the non-venomous kind.

Come on out to Michigan we’ll hike, I feel it’s a much better solution to the problem.

I think we’ve talked about hiking before? Did I speak to you about Geocaching on here?

I like to think of it as a hike with a purpose lol.

Nice!

Well, if you find yourself in Michigan let me know, we’ll take the Montego out, park it and then go hike.

I’ll put on boots or trail running shoes and you...well I guess you’ll be bare foot haha

Oh ok. I suppose way up here in the great north it’s pretty safe to walk around in bare feet the only dangers being lyme disease and the god damn turtles that will bite off the occasional toe.

Cool trip and pictures! I’m not sure if that truck is a Ford, all the heavy duty 20’s-early 30’s Ford trucks seem to have some sort of crease going across the firewall area.
